The 2023 Indian Premier League (also known as TATA IPL 2023) is the upcoming 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India. It is owned and operated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
From this season onwards, the IPL will return to its original Home and Away format, after a gap of 4 years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the previous 3 seasons being held at neutral venues. The 10 teams will play their home games at their predetermined home grounds across the nation.
From this season onwards for the next 5 years Viacom18‘s Jio Cinema app will broadcast it on internet while Star Sports will broadcast on television in India. In this season the participating teams will be able to appeal for review of No balls and Wide balls to the third umpire.

New stadium Debut:
Assam’s Barsapara Stadium is going to debut as a venue, it will host some games for Rajasthan Royals.
Teams participating:
In IPL 2023, ten teams will clash with each other for the ultimate win. The teams are Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. There is no new team participating for this season of IPL.
Most expensive player:
Punjab Kings bought English cricketer Sam Curran for whopping ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million), the most paid for a player in the history of the league. They bought him in The IPL auction which took place on 23 December 2022 in Kochi.
Team groups:
There are two groups (A and B) of teams who will play 7 home and away games each, with each team playing twice against teams from the opposite group and once against teams from their own group, making a total of seventy games across 12 arenas in the country.
Venues:
The league stage of the schedule will take place in 12 venues in India. Guwahati will host Rajasthan Royals‘ first 2 home games before they move to Jaipur for their remaining 5 home games, while Dharamsala will host Punjab Kings’ final 2 home games after they play their first 5 home games at Mohali, marking its return to the IPL after 10 years. The other 8 teams will play all their home games at their usual home grounds.
Prizemoney:
IPL has the highest prize money of any cricket league in the world, with a total of Rs 46.5 crore. In the 2022 edition of IPL, the winner received Rs 20 crore, the runners up received Rs 13 crore, third place received Rs 7 crore, and fourth place received Rs 6.5 crore, totaling to Rs 46.5 crore.
BCCI officials are discussing the possibility of raising IPL Prize Money by 20 to 25 percent, according to a report. A senior BCCI official stated that a decision on the final amount should be made before next year’s tournament, but the current prize of Rs 20 crore for the winner is still the highest in any cricket league. The teams’ owners do not rely on prize money for earnings, as their main sources of revenue are advertising and the BCCI’s revenue from IPL media rights, which is shared with the teams.
What to expect:
The upcoming season of the tournament will introduce new rules, including the ability to appeal for a review of No balls and Wide balls to the third umpire, and a limit of four overseas players per team in their playing XI. These new rules are expected to make the matches more thrilling to watch.
In the upcoming IPL 2023, the number of teams will increase from 8 to 10. Each team will play a total of 18 matches, 9 at home and 9 away, making a total of 94 matches. At the end of the league stage, the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs.
